The Multiethnic State and National Identities: the Serbian Experience in the 20th Century
Within the project activities of Working Group 5, charged with designing, creating, and developing digital infrastructure and tools for the digital and visual representation of the Serbian experience in a multi-ethnic state during the 20th century, high-precision GIS digital map of the Kingdom SHS/Yugoslavia) was created in 2023 for the project “The Multi-ethnic State and National Identities: The Serbian Experience in the 20th Century – SERBIE20”.
Based on these digitized maps of the administrative divisions of the Kingdom of SHS/Yugoslavia and data from the population censuses of the Kingdom of SHS/Yugoslavia for 1921 and 1931, data on all counties were entered, their borders were drawn, and then data on language and religion from the 1921 and 1931 censuses were recorded for each county individually. This approach facilitates spatial analysis of the entered data and the production of highly precise thematic maps based on the census results are enabled. The data on the language from the 1931 census are of particular value, since they were never officially published in Yugoslavia.
Thematic maps presented on this page are based on the created GIS-maps of the population census and represent the result of a spatial analysis of the religious and national composition of the Kingdom of SHS/Yugoslavia. The creation of the maps and the accompanying digital study was carried out by the company Kvadrilion d.o.o. under supervision of Dr. Danijel Kežić, research associate at the University of Regensburg, who also participated in development of a Manual and Methodology of Creation of GIS Digital Maps based on 1921 and 1931 population censuses.
